Seal Hitches a RIDE on the Back of a Humpback Whale in Australia in RARE Footage

A photographer captured a seal surfing on the back of a humpback whaleRobyn Malcolm was on a whale-watching trip on the NSW south coast.

A pod of whales were in the midst of a feeding frenzy when Robyn Malcolm captured the extremely rare occurrence.’

On a recent whale watching trip out of Eden, NSW, we experienced dolphins, seals, birds and whales feeding on bait fish.

Surf’s up! Photographer Robyn Malcolm captured this incredible shot of a seal surfing on a humpback whale ‘At times there was so much going on, you didn’t know which way to point the camera,’ Ms Malcolm said.

‘The seals and dolphins were going crazy on top of the water, then the whales would lunge straight through the middle. ‘I managed to get some great shots of whales feeding, but was surprised to find these photos in amongst them, as I didn’t see it at the time.

‘I don’t think he stayed there for long!’Ms Malcolm said this was not the only interesting interaction she had with whales recently.

Feeding frenzy: The photographer captured the image while a pod of whales were feeding ‘Last Saturday we were ‘mugged’ by the biggest group of humpbacks I have ever seen, who were happy to play with us for a while.’

What expert Geoff Ross told Daily Mail Australia to see a seal riding on a whale was extremely unusual, and only knew of one other case.

‘It’s very very rare, I’ve only heard of one of other occurrence and that was a seal that had climbed up on a whale to escape a killer whale,’ he said.
