Massive Bear Breaks into House then Dangles from window in Attempt to Escape in Colorado

This is the incredible moment a huge bear let itself into a home in Colorado and spent several minutes trying to execute a daring escape through an upstairs window.

The beast was noticed prowling around the place by a neighbor, who caught much of the excursion on video.

Heidi Hannah realized her neighbor was not home at the time the bear made entry into the green house in Steamboat Springs, and called the police for help.

To enter the home, the bear tore through a downstairs window and made his way through the house before attempting his top floor escape.

For several minutes, the unexpected visitor swung from the window, attempting to drop to the ground, but ultimately decided the drop was too far and opted instead to swing back inside and go back out through his initial entry point before disappearing into the woods.

Ryan MacFarlane, the owner of the invaded home, said he learned of his uninvited guest while he was at work.

He told Fox31 that the bear ‘got his nails in there and just ripped that window right open, and got inside and helped himself to my pork chops I had out for dinner that night, got some snacks out of the pantry and knocked over the plants – nothing too crazy.’

The homeowner said: ‘I was definitely anxious to get there, and the thought was going through my mind that there were going to be thousands and thousands of dollars in damage. And that wasn’t the case this time.’

The interior damage, MacFarlane said, was not so great, and he ultimately said he was ‘grateful’ that the bear ‘was a respectful house guest.’

Eventually, the wild animal decided the jump was too big a risk and began climbing back into the bedroom window

While inside the house, the brown bear snagged some pork chops, snacks from the cabinet, and managed to lock itself in a bathroom by mistake for a bit.

A representative of Colorado Parks and Wildlife said that now is the time of year when bears begin to come out.

They are mostly seen during the fall months, when they’re trying to bulk up for winter.

The representative said that bears are generally opportunistic and when on the hunt for food, will often opt for the most accessible, most filling option available.

Key to preventing unwanted drop-ins from hungry bears is practicing the habits that keep wildlife away from residential areas.

Some of those practices include: locking up trash bins, making sure all windows and doors are closed, and generally making sure food is not easily accessible to wildlife – in some cases, this may include gardens.

The CPW also recommends cleaning off barbecue grills entirely after each use, picking fruit before it ripens, and cleaning up fallen fruit from fruit-producing plants, and removing anything – including air fresheners and coolers – that might emit a scent from your vehicle.
